This recent painting has been accepted into the very competitive Landscapes show in the Federation Gallery, Vancouver BC.

The Saanich Peninsula Arts and Crafts Society spring members show will be on at the Mary Winspear Centre in Sidney, BC on the last weekend in April, 2024. 10 to 6 on Saturday April 27 and 10 to 4 on Sunday April 28. Admission for non-members is $10. Space permitting I will have two watercolours on exhibit at the show.

The Coast Collective visual arts branch of the Arts and Culture Colwood Society is finally opening a new gallery space! The show to celebrate will be held Wed through Sat between Feb 14 and March 14, 2024. I have two paintings accepted into the show.

A showcase for member art that features specific towns, cities or places. I've chosen to include a mixed media piece that is based on travels in Avignon, France, depicting the Palais du Papes (Pope's Palace).

I have once again been accepted into the one-day Paint-in on Moss Street, Victoria BC, one of the largest outdoor art exhibits on Vancouver Island. Fingers crossed for some good weather!

I will have an acrylic (yikes!) in this show, celebrating all things floral, in the old Pendray House at Pacific Landing in Colwood. The show is open Saturday and Sunday 10 to 4. Free admission. Parking is limited at the building so you need to park in the main parking area of Pacific Landing complex, and there are stairs at the venue too.

The annual Winter Small Works Show and Sale will be on through January 2023 at the Massey Sales Gallery at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria. I am pleased to announce that I will have one piece in the show. Drop in during the art gallery hours to see all the work by southern Vancouver Island artists.

My recent painting of the Yoho River Valley will be included in the Granville Island, Vancouver exhibit, as well as the online exhibition of this show by the National branch of the Federation of Canadian Artists.

The annual autumn exhibition of the Victoria Chapter of the Federation of Canadian Artists will take place November 1 through 12, 2022 at the Fortune Gallery in downtown Victoria. I have one painting in the exhibit.

From 1 to 3 pm I will be doing a talk and demo on how to frame watercolours without glass, for the JDF Arts and Crafts Guild painter's group.

An online auction of plein air paintings to raise funds for the Sooke seniors centre. Check the Sooke Arts Council website for information on how to bid online. The paintings can also be seen in the new gallery space for the duration of the auction.

The Sooke Arts Council Gallery is reopening in a new venue, across the parking lot from their old location on Church Road, and their first show is a celebration of folks who have done volunteer work for them in the past few years. This non-juried show features small works and a new gift shop area.

The national Federation of Canadian artists is once again hosting a contest and exhibition on behalf of the Nature Trust of British Columbia. I am pleased to have one piece accepted for the live exhibit on Granville Island in the Federation Gallery.

The Paint-in on Moss Street, Victoria is back as a live event for 2022, after two years of Covid closures. They had a lot of applicants so I got in off the wait list, but I'll start dusting off the tent and gear up for a long day. It's outdoors and I will keep masked and we'll all hope it is a safe and enjoyable event! It runs 11 am to 4 pm although the street is closed off well ahead of that, so people start wandering before setup is even done, and a beer garden that runs until 6 seems to keep some people there late.

This outdoor event is probably a "go" notwithstanding Covid. I will be joining my friend Linda Kirstein in the garden of Linda Barnes, to demo and sell our art and show off the garden from 10 am to 4 pm on the day. (Light)rain or shine. The Coast Collective Visual Arts branch of the Arts and Culture Colwood society is organizing this juried show at the historic Pendray House, at Pacific Landing in Colwood, BC. My work will be part of the online version of this show only, but still qualifies as a point toward my eventual Signature Status application. If it sells it will get framed and shipped from home.

In this two hour demo I will talk about and demonstrate how to create atmospheric perspective in the landscape using watercolours. Club members can paint along in the medium of their choice, as these principles apply to creating atmospheric perspective in oils and acrylics as well.

I have one work recognized in the FCA Vancouver Works on Paper, 2022 show. A recognized work appears in the online exhbition, but not in the live (Granville Island) gallery. Such works do count toward Signature status applications too!

The winter Small Works show is on at the Massey Sales Gallery and Spencer Showroom, at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, from the end of November through until the end of January, 2022. During the live run of the show, the works can also be viewed online. I have one piece in this years' show again!

I have one piece accepted into the Now exhibit at the FCA Vancouver Gallery on Granville Island. This exhibition is focused on current events of concern; my entry relates to the wildfires in BC and around the world sparked by a changing climate and human mismanagement.

I'll have one painting in the FCA Victoria Chapter Fall Show, which is being held first "in person" at Fortune Gallery in Victoria BC, until Nov 14th, and then thereafter will be online for a further two weeks (until November 28) at the Federation Gallery website. Due to space constraints all of the works in this show by Chapter members are no larger than 24 x 24.

The Nature Trust of BC, in honour of its 50th Anniversary, is sponsoring prizes at this Vancouver FCA show in the Federation Gallery on Granville Island. The focus of the exhibit is the natural beauty of British Columbia's landscape.

As a Member of the collective I will have an allotted wall space to display my newest creations. Each artist has a theme of their own choosing to showcase their recent work - mine will be a showcase of my Stonehenge paintings.

In addition to the individual wall space the Member artists will be working live on site on a collaborative, on-going installation piece (wall mounted) that will be created, documented and photographed as it progresses through the show.

I will be painting plein air on Sunday August 1 from about 10 am to 3 pm at Ed McGregor Park in Sooke. The painting will be donated to the En Plein Air Project, a joint fundraiser by the Sooke Arts Council and the Sooke Fine Arts Society. The art will be shown live in the SAC gallery from August 25 to Sept 5, and will be auctioned off online via the SFAS website.

Once again the premier Southern Vancouver Island art show is online only, due to Covid 19 concerns, but I'm excited to have one piece accepted into the show again this year! More to come!

The CliffSide 6 will be taking their Collaborations show on the road, with a second stop at the new Esquimault Community Arts Hub. Featuring works from both our previous shows in Metchosin and Sooke, as well as new works, the core theme is collaboration with each other, and with artist friends from the community. The CliffSide 6 is back with a new show! We will be featuring collaborative works with two or more people working on each piece of art. The core six will be working with each other, of course, but we will also be collaborating with other artists that we know. More details closer to the show. The SAC Gallery is open Wed through Sun, 11 to 4. Shown is a collaborative work I did with Catherine Mottashed.

The Coast Collective has been without a physical home due to Covid for many months now, but has been active at various popup markets and the like. This show will bring together the many Collective artists for a revival of the show that was due to be hung in 2020 just as they got shut down. It will hang at the new Esquimault Community Arts Hub and is a wonderful way for both organizations to showcase the arts. Open 10am to 5pm Wednesdays to Saturdays.

The new Esquimault Community Arts Hub is having a series of open call exhibits entitled Relations. The third part of the series, Island, has actually been divided into two hangings. I will have two pieces in this new and vibrant venue in February of 2021.

In this workshop we will learn the essentials of putting together a successful post-impressionist mountain painting. We will discuss sky and cloud formations, sculpting the peaks, the use of the white of the paper to create snow, the importance of cast shadows, atmospheric perspective, creating interest in the midground, and foreground options. Both wet on wet and direct painting with transparent and opaque watercolours will be demonstrated, as well as negative painting techniques. Class runs 10 am to 4 pm. Registration, a supply list, and additional details are on the Coast Collective website. Previous watercolour experience is highly recommended.

It's all about reflections at this upcoming show at Coast Collective. An extended deadline gave me a chance to put in a submission.

In this class we will look at the benefits of planning out your value design before embarking on your watercolour paintings. In the first part of the class we will look at how to use notan drawings to plan a value design, and how values relate to creating a strong focal point. We will then look at a variety of techniques you can use to save the white of your paper, and will practice various masking and painting methods. In the second part of the class we will look at various methods to create dark values, including different pigments, lowered intensity, and methods of tinting other colours. We will learn how to make black and discuss why you might not want to! Workshop runs 9:30 to 3:30; members only.

The Fall show of the Victoria Chapter of the FCA will be held once again at the Cedar Hill Rec Centre in Victoria. I have two accepted entries and will update in due course. Reception Thursday, November 14th - 6:00-8:30 pm

We will also look at the use of wet on wet painting and glazing, to see how those techniques can help create distance and dimension. Participants are encouraged to bring their own reference materials, as well as having their drawings done and their paper mounted on a painting support before class begins, so that the full day can be spent on the actual painting. There will be some instructor demos as well as individual consultations and a group critique. 10 am to 4 pm.

A spooky show for the fall season, at Coast Collective.

I will have a couple of miniatures in the next exhibit in the Westridge Gallery at Coast Collective.

It has been contended that the difference between science and art is that, when an artist paints, he or she is painting a particular moment in time, and that the process of doing so not only changes the artist, but the artist's world, making it impossible to replicate the result. What changes, it seems, is the artistic vision. In this solo exhibit, come join Elaine L Hughes as she explores this concept, through a series of pairs of paintings of identical scenes. Reception is September 15, 2019 from 1 to 3 pm at the Coast Collective; artist will be in attendance.

I am delighted to have one painting recognized by the Federation of Canadian Artists, which will be included in an online exhibition accompanying the Scenes From Western Canada show in Vancouver, BC. In early 2019 I will once again be doing demos at Opus in Victoria. This time I'll be focussing on showing how to create atmospheric perspective. The demo will be repeated twice on Sunday March 31, 2019 - once from noon to 1:30 (full) and again from 2:30 to 4 pm. Preregistration is required, but the event is free. I will also be teaching a class on this at Coast Collective in October, 2019.

THe Juan de Fuca Arts and Crafts Guild is having it's 43rd Annual Christmas Sale from 9am to 4 pm November 10, 2018 and from noon until 4:00 pm on November 11, 2018. Admission is free. I will have something at the event although I'm not quite sure what, yet!

I am pleased to have a painting accepted in the Nanaimo Fine Art Show, presented by the Nanaimo chapter of the Federation of Canadian Artists. This is a qualifying exhibit toward AFCA status with the FCA.

Another upcoming show at Coast Collective. This one involves artists revealing some of the process behind their work: sketchbooks, in progress photos, plein air studies and the like. Should be very interesting!

I have had a painting accepted for the biennial Nature of Island Artists Art Show. This event takes place at the Goldstream Nature House, and is a fundraiser for the environmental education program at Goldstream Provincial Park.

The ongoing exhibit at the JDF Recreation Centre, part of the community exhibition opportunities of the Coast Collective, has been refreshed for another couple of months and will likely be turned over again ahead of the Xmas season.

I am entered in the View Royal Art Fest on September 16, 2018. I will have a painting on display from 11 am to 3 pm along with a dozen or so other artists. We will be competing for a prize and a chance to have our painting hung at the View Royal Town Hall. Come vote! There is a prize draw for those who vote, and both the other artists and I will be painting demos during the event. It looks like it will be a fun day!

The class will run 3 Wednesdays from 11 am to 2 pm. Each student will bring one of his or her own paintings that is too dull, too pale, too muddy, or too timid, along with the reference material that was used, and the painter's usual paints and materials. We will then learn how to use better materials, stronger values and more vivid colours to bring more vibrancy to your pieces and correct weaknesses, as you redo your subject. I am thrilled to have a piece accepted for the Scenes from Western Canada show, which will be held at the Granville Island gallery of the FCA in Vancouver, BC. This national show counts toward my goal of applying for an AFCA designation at some point. Update: sold!

The Coast Collective and West Shore Arts Council are collaborating to run a popup store in the Westshore Town Centre from July until October 15, 2018. The shop will be open Wednesdays through Sundays from 11am to 5 pm (the same hours as the Coast Collective main gift shop). Collective members will be doing art demos on site and I will be there on August 25, 2018 to do a watercolour demo. There may be dates in September and October too, stay tuned!

I have an entry in to the Coast Collective's upcoming show that hilights the beautiful Galloping Goose Trail, which runs from downtown Victoria out to the southern reaches of Vancouver Island, BC.

The Westridge Collection will be hanging at the Coast Collective for the month of August.

One is already pre-sold but will be on exhibit, while the other will be for sale, at the Coast Collective's Collaborations show in August. It promises to be very exciting; I've seen a few of the other collaborative pieces already and there is a lot of exciting, creative work coming up!

I am excited to have two paintings accepted to the Sooke Fine Arts Show, the Premier Summer Arts Event on Vancouver Island. See their website for more details on events and times that the show is open to the public.

Once again I am going to brave the elements and the massive crowds, as I have been juried in to be able to set up a booth at the Moss Street Paint In. My artist friend Barb Scott missed last year but we plan to set up together this year as she has also been accepted. I am continuing to exhibit at the Coast Collective members' Westridge Gallery.

In this course we will learn the essentials of putting together a successful post-impressionist mountain painting. We will discuss sky and cloud formations, sculpting the peaks, the use of the white of the paper to create snow, the importance of cast shadows, atmospheric perspective, creating interest in the midground, and foreground options. Both wet on wet and direct painting with transparent and opaque watercolours will be demonstrated, as well as negative painting techniques.

Some previous drawing and painting experience is highly recommended.

I will be joining a number of other plein air painters in the Italian Garden at Hatley Park National Historic Site from 11am - 4 pm on Mother's Day (May 13) for their 23rd annual Paint-in and Craft Fair.

I will be putting a piece into the next hanging of Coast Collective's Westridge Collection, an ongoing exhibit of Collective members.

I will be repeating the demo that I did at Opus recently for the Painter's Group of the JDF Arts and Crafts guild. The meeting is held at the Coast Collective starting at 7 pm.

I didn't get my new Sherwood Forest painting done in time (due to Cuba travel) so I'm happy that the First Nations lore about the magic of Medicine Lake qualifed this painting for the upcoming Coast Collective Folklore show. Medicine Lake vanishes in the winter and reappears every spring; this "good medicine" has been revealed to be due to an extensive network of small underground drainage pathways that spread its magical waters throughout the region.

I'm excited to be accepted to the upcoming watercolour and pastel show at the national Federation of Canadian Artists' Granville Island gallery. This is a show that will also help me qualify to apply for Signature status in the future, so it's quite exciting. Not to mention it's my first exhibit in Vancouver.

As part of the Coast Collective's Roaming Gallery program, I am exhibiting 17 works at the Constituency office of Premier John Hogan, in Langford, BC, during the months of April and May, 2018.

Come learn to make and trade ATCs (Art Trading Cards). These are miniature artworks (playing card size) that are created with the intention of trading them for other ATCs. They are always traded, not sold. ATCs are in any 2D medium, so bring your favourite acrylics, oils, watercolours, collage or drawing materials. We will learn to sign up for swaps online, make and package the cards, send them in for trade and send out thank yous to other participants. Additional details on the Event page link provided.

Another submission accepted into a Coast Collective Show - this one is their annual celebration of all things floral!

The FCA Victoria Spring Show will be held at the Coast Collective, from February 28, 2018 to March 11, 2018. I am excited to be a participant again this year!

Winds, waves, mists, tides, the West Coast life. This is my theme for the Transformations show upcoming at Coast Collective, for Associate Members only.

2018 will start another round of Members' exhibits in the Westridge Gallery.

The ongoing exhibit of Coast Collective Members' work at the Juan de Fuca Recreation Center continues in 2018, with a new exhibit starting in February, and a turnover in mid-May. The next turnover will be in September.

There's an upcoming show at Coast Collective that I'm entering with an acrylic painting. It's a show for both new artists, and for established artists working in a medium that is new to them. Well, open acrylics are a thing unto themselves but I am putting a small work in for consideration anyway.

The final turnover in 2017 of the juried Westridge Collection for Coast Collective members will coincide with their Gifts and Wishes show, and features small works under 16" x 16" in size.

The gallery contains work by over 20 local artists, including me! There's fused glass, lampwork glass, pandora glass, rocks, mosaics, colourful clay, metals, china, upcycled silver and stained glass, watercolours, oils, acrylics, mixed media, ink, graphite and fiber. There will be extra displays for gifts and giving this year. No admission. There's also a grand opening celebration by the new organizers on the 24th of November.

The final turnover of the Art Space, a project for Coast Collective members, takes place in November 2017 and will carry over until the new year.

I have been invited to do a demo and paint-along with the Windsor Park Art Club in Oak Bay, BC. I am going to demo the technique of doing multiple miniatures to create cards or a series of small studies, and discuss some of the benefits of working this way.

I have two paintings in this juried celebration of autumn and the night.

My entry into the 15th annual Sidney Fine Art show was accepted. It's one of the major juried exhibits in the region. Update: I got an Honourable Mention from the jurors!

The annual fall show of the Victoria Chapter of the Federation of Canadian Artists will take place in October at the Cedar Hill Recreation Centre, Victoria BC. My entry in this juried exhibit won Third Place.

My plein air contest winner, The Fisgard Lighthouse, will appear at this exhibit along with another painting accepted into the show, starting in early October. I'm delighted that they are using my painting to advertise the event!

A plein air painting competition as part of the City of Colwood's Seaside Festival. We will have 3 hours to paint (from 11 am until 2 pm), then paintings are juried and prizes awarded. All the paintings are eligible for display at the Coast Collective's Canada 150 Exhibit October 4 to 15, 2017. Update: I won first place!

Another piece going in to the next Westridge Collection (juried showcase for Coast Collective members).

I have a different painting hanging in the Art Space (ongoing exhibit) at the Juan de Fuca Recreation Centre from mid-August onward. This continuous exhibit is organized for Coast Collective members and refreshes every couple of months.

Going to do another demo at Coast Collective in August - I might work on some florals for a change? We shall see closer to the date!

I have also had one miniature juried into the Coast Collective's Small Works show in August, 2017. Reception is August 11 from 7 to 9 pm at the Coast Collective gallery.

I've been accepted as a core artist at a gallery in Metchosin, BC. I hung my first piece there today and will be turning over my inventory there every few months, as well as doing some classes and workshops. The leadership of the cooperative is turning over right now, and the building is changing hands, so I will know more about the plans for the future fairly soon. In the mean time, must paint and frame a bit more inventory as I will now have some display space to fill for the next six months!

I have had one painting juried into the Associates Showcase at the Coast Collective. The opening reception is the evening of Friday, July 28, from 7 to 9 pm.

I've been accepted to the annual Paint In on Moss Street, sponsored by the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria. It's a one-day outdoor demo and sale. Wrapped and ready to go! I have three miniatures that have been juried into the Small Treasures group show at the Coast Collective in November, 2016. Come meet with the artists on the evening of November 4, 2016 at 7:00 pm and see the many smaller-sized fine art pieces by Collective members at the show.

It will be almost Halloween so I thought for my next watercolour demo I would show folks my method for creating night scenes. It doesn't seem to be a commonplace subject for the medium, and I am going to contrast the effects that one can get using glazes in blue vs glazes in silver or pearlescent watercolour, as well as how to create stars and moons.

My painting "Icefields Parkway - Red" has been juried into the Westridge Collection (members' gallery) at the Coast Collective. It will be on exhibition and sale there for the months of November and December, 2016.

I will be doing a demo to show how to work on multiple paintings on a single piece of paper in order to create a mini-series of paintings. I learned this technique from my friend, mentor and colleague Gregg Johnson and it's become a favourite way for me to work when I want some small pieces. The demo will be ongoing from 11 - 4 and I will be doing a repeat of the demo on Sunday Sept 18.

My piece "Mt Athabasca from the glacier" has been juried in to the Westridge Collection at the Coast Collective and will be on exhibit & sale there for the months of September and October.
